José Curbelo, a Latin jazz band leader, agent and promoter who helped popularize the cha-cha-cha in the United States and made Tito Puente a star, died Friday of heart failure at Aventura Hospital. He was 95.
Curbelo, of North Miami Beach, was born Feb. 18, 1917, in Havana, where his American-born father played violin with the Havana Philharmonic Orchestra.
"He was the last of the pioneers of the Latin jazz band era,” said Freddy Montilla, whose father, Fernando Montilla, owned Montilla Records and was Curbelo’s friend.

José Ignacio Rasco nació en La Habana, Cuba. Estudió en el Colegio Belén, y Derecho y Filosofía y Letras en la Universidad de La Habana. Fundador en 1959 y primer presidente del Partido Demócrata Cristiano (PDC) en Cuba, actualmente es Presidente de Honor de dicho partido. Asiduo colaborador de Diario Las Américas, varios de sus artículos han sido recopilados bajo el título «Huellas de mi cubanía». Es autor asimismo de numerosos ensayos, entre los que sobresalen «Hispanidad y cubanidad» y «Jacques Maritain y la Democracia Cristiana». Su ensayo «Integración cultural de América Latina» fue premiado por el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo, donde laboró durante nueva años. Ha sido merecedor de diversos premios periodísticos, como el Sergio Carbó y el José Ignacio «Pepín» Rivero. Fue galardonado con la orden «Isabel La Católica» por su defensa del idioma español. Fundó en 1982 y presidió por muchos años el Instituto Jacques Maritain de Cuba (IJMC), organización dedicada al estudio de problemas actuales a la luz del pensamiento del pensador católico francés.
